Since 1988, the Assistance League of Wichita, an all-volunteer organization and member of the National Assistance League, has sought to transform lives and strengthen community through key programs, including,
OPERATION SCHOOL BELL, providing new clothing to 3,000 USD 259, K-12 students in partnership with JCPenney West;
SCHOLARSHIPS, providing 20-25 first and second year scholarships for technical/vocational job-ready training programs at WSU Tech or Butler Community College to qualifying USD 259 seniors;
ASSAULT SURVIVORS KITS, providing clothing, footwear, hygiene items and journals to the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center for nearly 500 recipients annually; and,
BEAR HUGS, providing teddy bears, journals/sketch books and tote bags to child victims of violence treated by Forensic Nursing Services at Via Christi, St. Joseph and at Wesley Medical Center.

A Great Thrift Shop for a Great Community
The ALW Thrift Shop, 100% volunteer-run, launched 12 years ago. Now located at 2431 E. Douglas, at Poplar, the shop was located about two blocks east but quickly grew out its original space. The shop is open Tuesdays-Thursday, 10AM-4PM and Fridays-Saturdays, 10AM-4PM.
As a member of the Douglas Design District, the shop offers a 50% discount on 1 item during the monthly 2nd Saturday shopping events sponsored by DDD. Just show your DDD shoppers pass or bag to receive the discount.
Shop volunteers receive gently used and new clothing, furniture and a wide variety of home goods (from books to dishes and more) from throughout the community. You may bring your items to the shop during regular business hours. Donated goods are evaluated and placed for sale in one of several departments – men’s or women’s clothing and accessories, housewares and linens, furniture, children’s toys and clothing, vintage, jewelry and books. You’ll find an expansive selection in each area plus special departments during various seasons, such as Christmas or ski wear.
Each Monday, teams of ALW volunteers prepare the shop for the next week. The weekly sales are announced Monday afternoons. The shop is responsible for half of the annual funds raised to support four philanthropic programs. Other funds come from grants, individual gifts and events.
